Surge in Vehicle Thefts

Keeping our partners informed

Recent reports have highlighted a concerning rise in vehicle thefts across the United States, with recent news specifying North Texas and Oklahoma as auto theft hotspots. Whether you are an auto dealer or a vehicle owner, staying informed and proactive is crucial to mitigate the risks associated with these thefts.

Stolen Vehicles Recovered in Dallas

Dallas detectives recently uncovered a theft ring at a northwest Dallas property, resulting in the recovery of several stolen vehicles. Residents of the block were shocked to discover the extent of the operation. One victim of car theft reported that her vehicle was stolen in Dallas and decided to investigate the scene herself. Although her car was not found, numerous other stolen vehicles and even jet skis were recovered.

Police arrested a 22-year-old thief in connection with the thefts. According to NBC 5, the thief’s father claimed his son, a mechanic, thought the vehicles were from customers. The investigation remains ongoing, highlighting the need for vehicle owners and auto dealers to be vigilant and use tracking devices to aid in the recovery of stolen property.

Theft of Hyundai and Kia Vehicles is the New Trend

National data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reveals a significant shift in the types of vehicles most frequently stolen. The Hyundai Elantra has now overtaken full-size pickup trucks as the most stolen vehicle in 2023 nationwide, with over 48,000 thefts reported. Thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles have surged by as much as 1000% since 2020, driven by a social media trend that exploits vulnerabilities in these cars.

In Oklahoma, vehicle thefts have also been on the rise. But pickups are still on top of the list of most targeted vehicles, with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F150 Series Pickup, and Dodge Ram Pickup leading the pack. The NICB’s data indicates that vehicle theft prevention measures are more important than ever.
